Cardigan Welsh Corgi Breeders

Cardigan Welsh Corgi Breeders enjoy a great opportunity to track the breed’s genetic health, since this is not a numerous breed. Cardigan Welsh Corgi dogs and Pembroke Welsh dogs have long been considered the same breed. In 1934, two breed standards were worked out for each of the breeds, so they went separate ways. The English Cardigan Welsh Corgi Association was established in 1926. The dog was shipped to America in 1934, and was officially recognized there the same year. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi Club of America was founded in the following year.

These dogs have been valuable for centuries as herding and working dogs. They have also proven to be excellent guard dogs and vermin controllers. Today, they perform fine in competitive obedience, agility, tracking and herding trials. Their herding instincts are still very strong, and are manifested in the dog’s attempts to “herd” people and other animals by nipping at their heels. Cardigan Welsh Corgi Breeders place a strict emphasis on the dog’s herding abilities.

Cardigan Welsh Corgi dogs are very protective around their loved ones and are often short with strangers. For this reason, early socialization is absolutely imperative. They should also be trained not to nip at people’s heels. They are very intelligent and active, so they require constant mental and physical stimulation in order to grow properly. Lack of activity may result in excessive weight. Responsible and conscientious Cardigan Welsh Corgi Breeders usually instruct prospective buyers on how to properly train and handle these dogs.

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi dog is not very large in size, measuring 10-13 inches high at the withers. Cardigan Welsh Corgi Breeders are very strict on their dogs’ physical and mental traits that are stipulated in the breed standard. The dog has large and upright ears, elongated head, deep and broad chest, strong limbs and long tail. The eyes are usually brown, and the density of the eye color depends on the coat color. Blue merle dogs can have blue eyes. These dogs have a medium-length double-coat, which occurs in black, black and tan, brindle, black and brindle, sable, blue merle and different shades of red. White markings are permissible.

Cardigan Welsh Corgi dogs live 12-15 years. They rarely suffer from genetic diseases and retain their stamina well into adulthood. However, some lines are affected with the PRA and glaucoma. These dogs can also be susceptible to obesity. Because the breed stock is quite limited, it is easy for Cardigan Welsh Corgi breeders to track the breed’s health and keep their genetic pool in a good condition.
