Cardigan Welsh Corgi dogs are small low set dogs with moderately heavy bone structure and short legs. Males and females stand about 10.5-12.5 inches. Males weigh usually more than females. The dog should be about 30-38 pounds, whereas the female is from 25 to 34 pounds. Generally, substance and proportion are more important when evaluating Cardigan Welsh Corgis. The dog should appear neither too large, nor small.

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi dog has dark almond-shaped eyes with the expression of friendliness and interest. Blue merle Cardigans can have blue eyes. The large ears are the characteristic feature of the breed. The ears are carried erect. They are slightly rounded at the tips.

The breed has a medium length coat that is weather resistant. Corgis come in shades of red, brindle, and sable. They can be of black and blue with some markings, and other colors. Actually, there is no color preferred. Cardigan Welsh Corgi owners do not have to trim the coat except the areas on the feet.

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is not hard to own. Their coat requires regular brushing to remove dead hairs. The breed is a medium shedder. The amount of exercise needed depends on the age of the dog, weather, and other aspects. Overall, the dog is energetic and enjoys various activities. However, its exercise needs are not great. A Cardigan Welsh Corgi will be OK with a few walks a day, each from 20 to 60 minutes. Do not expose a Cardigan Welsh Corgi to high jumps and stair climbs. The breed is prone to joint problems that are aggravated by high climbs.

Cardigan Welsh Corgis - Why Choose this Breed?

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is a friendly companion. Although not as popular as its relative, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, the breed has a number of fanciers. When asked about the advantages of owning this breed, they state that the dog is very adaptable and easy to train. Indeed, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi is very intelligent. It has retained its herding instincts and learns commands quickly. However, the disadvantage of herding instincts is that the dog is likely to nip heels.

Cardigan Welsh Corgis are recommended for active people. This is not a one-man dog. The breed is good with children and makes a good companion for the whole family. Their small size allows them to be kept in an apartment. However, a small yard is suited best for Cardigan Welsh Corgi dogs.
